Attic Insulation
Challenge
Our client, a homeowner in Ottawa, was interested in updating their attic insulation. An inspection revealed insufficient attic insulation, poor air sealing, and energy loss through the chimney area.
Solution
1. Initial Inspection & Assessment
We conducted a thorough inspection of the attic and found:
- Outdated insulation that no longer met current building codes.
- Significant air leaks around penetrations and the chimney.
- A bat barrier that restricted proper insulation placement.
2. Removal of Existing Barriers
The first step was removing the bat barrier to create a clean and accessible workspace.
3. Air Sealing
To minimize air leakage, we used ZypFoam to seal all gaps, cracks, and penetrations in the attic, paying special attention to:
- Areas around electrical wiring and plumbing.
- Gaps around attic hatches and recessed lighting fixtures.
4. Chimney Insulation Wrap
To address the thermal bridging around the chimney, we installed a high-performance SuperAttic™ Rock Wool chimney wrap insulation. This step was crucial in preventing heat loss and reducing fire risks.
5. Reinsulating with Cellulose
Once air sealing was complete, we installed cellulose insulation throughout the attic:
- Ensured a uniform R-value to meet code requirements.
- Provided an eco-friendly and effective insulation solution
Results
- The attic now meets code requirements for insulation, providing improved thermal resistance.
- Air leakage was significantly reduced, leading to better energy efficiency and lower utility bills.
- The chimney insulation wrap minimized heat loss and enhanced overall comfort in the home.
By upgrading the attic insulation, air sealing with Zyp Foam, and wrapping the chimney, we provided a comprehensive solution that improved the home’s energy efficiency, comfort, and safety. A well insulated home is a happy home!
